“My heart is turned over within Me, All My compassions are kindled.”Hosea 11:8

O, that our hearts would be turned over, that our lovelessness would be toppled, our hard-heartedness shattered, and our coldness melted by the compassions of God Himself!

O, to love You as you are, to love righteousness, justice, and compassion, and to love human souls as You do! Give us Your own love, Lord. Catch us up in Your heart, and enable us to be an expression of Your Son in this generation, that our sons and daughters might see your majesty.

Have been kind of missing around here lately…mainly because of Unleash Wichita. We are getting pumped about what is taking place in our community through this project. We have been able to radically bless families through this campaign, we are beginning to partner with many local and global missions organizations, and the entire church is gearing up for a huge outreach project called Thanksgiving of Grace. This is just the kick off to UNLEASH WICHITA – there is so much more to come.

Owen is starting to respond to the TV. You know when Mickey Mouse gives that awkward pause after a sentence like he is really talking to us. Owen believes it and talks back. It is cute. Just going to be weird when he starts talking to dead people.

Halloween was fun. I like Halloween. It was nice to be able to take Owen around to different events and houses. I like being a parent.

Owen is getting a new little cousin soon. Rachel’s sister is having a baby. They are hoping for a boy. I remember desperately wanting a little girl when we got pregnant. I am glad we had a boy. I have some friends that just found out they are having twins…crazy.

Been thinking about how the church needs to be like Apple. More on that later.

Been doing some freelance graphic design stuff lately. I have always done freelance work, but it is actually picking up recently…it is nice just a bit overwhelming with full-time husband, full-time dad, full-time employee, and full-time student. I have an amazing wife in Rachel who supports me in this. She deserves a Starbucks coffee.

So if you didn’t hear, we got a new president. I am hopeful for changes and excited about being a part of history. I am honestly surprised at the response from the Christian community. I know many people are truly upset with who is in office, but I have to believe that it is God’s will (he does control the universe right?). I have to believe that for whatever reason this man has been elected to office. As a Christian I am called to pray for Barack Obama, not criticize him. I am called to pray that God will make him prosporous, not make my facebook status say he is the anti-christ. I am called to seek God’s face for our nation, not make idle threats to move to Mexico or Canada. I am not called to pray my own personal agenda, but pray what is truly beating on God’s heart. Sure this guy has different views than me, but both of them did, and I haven’t met one person in my life that has the exact same views as I do. So to throw it out there in the open…I support Barack Obama. Why? Because he is now our president, he embodies hope. Hmmm (soap box) we are called to love. Because, simply, love wins. Yep, LOVE WINS.

Late night (or early morning) thoughts

Can’t sleep. It seems I get a good bout of insomnia during the Fall….or maybe it is the cricket that is right outside my window that I have open because of the nice weather. Who knows – either way – I am awake. Been thinking – seems like I do that (at least once a week…typically on Thursdays) a lot. I have so much bouncing around in my little (or my wife Rachel considers large) head. I tend to forget to write it all down – which ticks me off later when I remember I forgot to do something. Regardless here are some of my thoughts…

  • I have been debating a switch from wordpress to blogger. Mainly because I like Google and think their stuff is pretty stellar. I think with the switch we will make the site a little more formal with its own domain name … this is all depending on the way my “blow money” envelope looks at the end of the month. So – we’ll see. Any feedback would be appreciated.
  • I dealt with the same frustration my friend Kevin faced this week – on several occasions. Again, Google is nice, so I might be switching my blogreader too.
  • I let a fly in my house today – don’t know when or how, but it tends to want to stay close to me. Like I saved it from a cruel world and it wants to become a pet like my dog. I would never kill my dog, but the fly has got to die…be right back.
    still flying.
  • Saturday Night LIve stepped out of the box this week and put Weekend Update on Thursday nights. They are doing this until the election. I think they should do this for good. Probably some of the funniest stuff on televsion.
  • I love momentum. I love big things. stay tuned.
  • Thursday was the last day for Owen to go to the sitter he has been going to since January. We are starting something new next week and it will be so good for him. The place is run like a preschool and he is going to learn a ton of stuff. Weird request, but, pray that his transition goes smooth.
  • There was a waitress at Old Chicago tonight that did a lot of hovering. I am a professional (or at least I think I am) people watcher. I get distracted by the mannerisms and quirky behavior of people. This waitress really didn’t do anything the entire time we were there (30 minutes maybe?). She would walk to the kitchen and come out a few minutes later and just stare at empty tables, walk back to the kitchen and come back out and stare, walk back to the kitchen and come out with a pop for who? no one. She turned around in annoyance like she forgot something and walked back into the kitchen. It was weird.
  • The fly keeps landing on the computer screen. I wish the screen was a bug zapper…kind of.
  • Saw a good friend of ours we haven’t seen in a while at the grocery store the other day. She is one of the coolest people we know and it was nice to see her. When I think of someone who has the evidence of the Holy Spirit in their lives (the evidence meaning fruit because that is how we can tell a tree is an apple tree right? hmmm – nevermind – anyways) I think of Melisa. Good to see you Mel!
  • So the Cubs are out of the race. I guess deep down I assumed they would be. I am thankful that the White Sox are out too. Just in case you guys wanted my opinion – I am going for the Phillies.

Thursday Thoughts

I think it is awesome how God partners people together. For me, I have the best wife – she listens to me, she genuinely cares about me, she is strong in the areas that I am lacking. I am so blessed to be married to Rachel – she is just a great partner in life. She does so much more for me than I do for her … but I do write a great blog and can use it to my benefit … I love you Rachel!

Owen is going to make an appearance in the Sunday Morning Experience this week. Will be good. I will have the recap here on my blog shortly afterwards.

I constantly wrestle with the idea of what Jesus would be doing if He walked the Earth today. What would it look like. I don’t know why I am so fascinated with this thought – it has been something that is constant in my life since I first made Him controller of my life. Anyone have any good reads on this subject?

I think he might stop by my good friend Joe‘s house on Thursday nights. There are not too many people I know that I really believe hear God on a constant basis like this guy.

Why do people who really want my opinion call me on the phone. I think these organizations have lost touch with my generation and culture. I am not saying I will answer every email, but I do fill out online surveys.

So these tv show premiers have been good. One thing I thought about today is that if I am ever in Seattle – or anywhere for that matter – and something happens to me – I don’t want to end up in a hospital like the one on Grey’s Anatomy. The doctors are pretty much idiots and their building is kind of crappy – like water leaks and stuff…must be because of that bomb a few years back and they got bad contractors in to fix it.

So Owen, like his mom, talks in his sleep. It’s pretty cute. Tonight he is dreaming about tractors and trucks. Sometimes (okay a lot of the time) I wish I could be a kid again. Something about childhood that makes me happy – maybe the fact that I didn’t have to pay bills.

Been selling some books on Amazon – it’s pretty cool – actually making a little bit of money. Dave Ramsey told me to do so. He also told me to do a few other things that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around, but maybe by the end of Financial Peace I will be able to do so.

God is doing some cool stuff in my life. Really just putting some discipline back in it where it belongs. I know God speaks to me, and sometimes I can really understand what He is trying to do in my life. I wish I could explain it, but it is more of a feeling type of thing rather than an audible voice (which I picture it sounding like the mac guy’s voice for some reason). I really feel that God is getting ready to move – not only in my own life – but at GracePoint too. I will do this in a more formal way soon, but I want to ask you to join me in prayer. Selfishly I would love you to pray for me – but let’s keep it at our personal lives – but for those of you with any connection to GracePoint and those of you who just love to pray – please join me in praying for what God to be able to move like He desires – whatever that means or looks like. (In my “more formal invite” I will add some specifics).

Good thoughts – eh? I will leave you with one last one …

Thursday Thoughts

I am looking forward to church this Sunday – if you are in town – you’ve got to be there. It’s gonna be cool – seriously – we are ending the I Love the 80s series, the way it should be. Bring your video camera too – might be worth getting some video.

This local advertising agency has some good thoughts on marketing to men. They seem to be doing alright in this area. This is good stuff. It is hard to get men to come to church – maybe we can learn from this group.

I have asked for a lot for my birthday that is coming up soon. I am not really greedy, I just am throwing out ideas to my wife, Rachel. This camera is pretty darn amazing in itself.

Speaking of cameras – this video is pretty cool it is shot at 1000fps (frames per second) over a duration of 4 seconds with a Phantom HD…(via kenwilson).

I watch too much TV.

I’ve posted about this before – but I still think The Girl Effect is an amazing concept, project, and cause. I think it tells a very powerful story.

Ready for Labor Day?

Friday Thoughts…

I have found a new favorite drink. Dublin Dr. Pepper. It is made with pure cane sugar. My aunt lives near the place where they bottle it and brought up some last time she was in town. It is sweeter and in glass bottles. Nice.

School started this week. It is going to be a long semester unless I get my stuff organized. The Remember the Milk program has come in super handy for this. It is just an online to-do list, but I can pull it off at work or at home. Again, nice.

We have started using Google Docs at work. It has been a great tool for us as a few of us on staff work off of a mac. It is just an easy way to access documents.

I am waiting for my Obama text. I have honestly not decided on who I will vote for … I think the whole texting thing is pretty cool though.

I am afraid of a ton of stuff – small spaces, my wife jumping out from around the corner, drowning, and heights…so looking at this freaks me out.

Owen turned two yesterday. He had to sit in “time out” for a while. What a sucky birthday gift from dad? His party is tomorrow – we have a pretty cool gift for him – and know of another gift he is getting too.

This could be cool for downtown Wichita…if it lasts. It’s coming to the Waterwalk.

I don’t think I like ketchup as much as I used to. Just a random thought – sorry.

This morning was fun at GracePoint. I was able to hang out in WOW (that’s our kids area) and host their experience. Kids are a ton of fun. Over in the adult experience we were rocking out to some awesome 80s tunes, great worship, and a message getting us pumped for Financial Peace University. Sounds like we have close to 250 adults going through this study. This awesome and I am pumped for what God is going to do in the lives of those at GP.

Did you see the Opening Ceremonies to the Olympics…that guy was a freakin genius and extremely creative. Awesome. Saw this a while back and thought it was pretty interesting. Check it out since we all seem to be on the Olympic buzz.

By the way, I think it is pretty cool that our president is at the Olympics.

My Macbook is cracking. Ridiculous. But that is why you buy the protection plan.

Thinking about running a contest here on my blog to coincide with this 80s series. Be watching later this week for it – it will be cool.

Owen is getting bigger and cuter. Rachel and I talk about him constantly and we are so blessed to have him as a kid. He is a brat sometimes (but who isn’t). He will be turning 2 in a couple of weeks. Crazy.

Watched a show on hoarding tonight…will be throwing away everything tomorrow.

Have you seen this picture? Too funny. I will have to find the school picture with my fly down and my shirt coming through it. It was embarrassing, but not this bad.

I will be starting school in a couple of weeks. Kind of looking forward to it – this semester’s classes are going to be pretty good.

Whoa Oh! from Forever the Sickest Kids is a pretty catch tune – I like it.

I like watermelon.

Thursday Thoughts

Been a while … good to be back on schedule.

I am pumped for this weekend at GracePoint. Not only are we kicking off one of the coolest message series – GP AT THE MOVIES – but we are moving into a whole new season of awesome and relevant experiences at GracePoint. The Creative Team and staff have been working hard on planning out the vision and direction God is moving us in. You will not want to miss a single week these next few months! We have a ton of surprises and events coming!

I have been really digging Angels and Airwaves lately. Their sound is pretty stinkin awesome, and their marketing on their upcoming album has been pretty cool too.

Ministry sometimes brings chaos to your life…and for me the chaos comes in the form of not being a good steward of my time. I have had some great people in my life keep me accountable in some of these areas. Lately, I have just been forgetting things. I can remember a lot of stuff – but when it comes to daily tasks or appointments – it’s not happening for me. So I went back to some old web apps that have seem to help me get my insanity back. Google Calendar has been nice because I can access it anywhere – and I have brought back Remember the Milk – mainly because I need a checklist and it is compatible with Google…now I just need to spend the extra money and get it on my phone.

I am so ready for our vacation. We take a trip to Table Rock Lake each year. Each year I go there, I don’t want to leave. And I always get inspired to start a Summer Camp there on the lake – or go work for one. Maybe someday – just not anytime soon.

Every Summer there is one snack I crave like none other – Lays Dill Pickle chips. They sold them here in Wichita for a few years and then they suddenly stopped. I got online and the closest place I can get them is up in Halstead – about 30 miles away. Can’t justify the drive but I have found an alternative PRINGLES EXTREME DILL CHIPS. Very tasty!

My son has begun exploring the tantrum phase – please pray for us. He is beginning to make full sentences and actually tell us what he wants – but I guess the tantrums are a side effect.

I watched Camp Rock a week or so ago – I used to be a Children’s Pastor so give me a break PLUS I am speaking at a kids camp this Summer so I need to get back in touch with what is hot for 4th/5th graders. It reminded me of High School Musical (yes I watched it too), but there was actually a song that could be an amazing worship tune – check it out.

I think I am going to go buy these shoes or these this weekend instead of bleaching my hair.

We have a busy weekend ahead of us – so that is all for now. Want to invite you (those of you in the greater Wichita area) to come out to the Wingnuts game this Friday night. It is Faith Night (whatever that means) but we have two really cool bands playing. Edge of Grace is the main show after the game and Joliet will be playing our pregame show. Should be fun.

Two mission ops for you too this weekend. We are headed out to Greensburg for the GracePoint work day – you can catch the bus or drive out there on your own. If you can’t make it out, but have a few hours we are also looking for some help with our Second Saturday service project. If you are interested in either one and want more information let me know or contact the GP office.

Sometimes it takes one sentence to challenge me to the core…

“What you do reveals what you believe about God regardless of what you say.”

Thursday thoughts

We had a pretty nice staff meeting yesterday. We decided to move it to the afternoon and have it off-site. Off-site meetings seemed to really fit me better. The cool part was that we decided on Larry Knott’s (our Administrative Pastor) pool as the location. We were able to sit, float, swim and still have (somewhat of) a productive meeting….I got sunburned – on the top of my feet. That is the worse place to have it too.

Tony Morgan had something cool on his site the other day. He linked to a little page called Moodstream. Like he says – don’t try to figure it out. It’s kind of cool.

This week I broke the faucet in my bathroom…instead of replacing the faucet, I decided to replace the faucet, sink, and vanity. It was a much needed upgrade to our house. We live in a house that was built in 1951 and we are the second owners. It is fun because everything we are doing is really the first upgrade. Home projects are fun when they go the right way.

If I played professional sports I would want to live in Boston – Go Celtics! – unless I played baseball then Wrigleyville of course!

As much as I love Apple computers – this is pretty amazing!

Saw that Andy posted a mastered version of Everything to Me – a song he played a few weeks back for offering at GracePoint. If you have a myspace you should download it!

Went to dinner with some good friends we hadn’t seen in a while. It is good to catch up, and just hear how life is going with each other. I am so thankful for the friendships that have stood time. God made us to be relational.

Thinking about going here makes me pretty happy. It’s happening in just a few short weeks.

Now that my feet is sweating from the sunburn – let’s call it quits!
